Typically, to qualify for asylum, you must show that you have suffered or are likely to suffer persecution in your home country on account of your race, ethnicity, religion, political opinion, social group, gender or sexual orientation.
You must show that the government was involved in the persecution or acquiesced to or was unable to prevent the persecution.
You must apply for asylum by submitting Form I-589 within one year of entering the United States (with some exceptions).
You can obtain a work permit while your application for asylum is pending, but you must wait 150 days after submitting your asylum application before submitting your application for work authorization (Form I-765).
The judge or adjudicator is obligated by law to accept your testimony (unless it is inherently lacking in credibility) even if you have trouble finding corroborative evidence.
You have the right to have an attorney help you with your case at no cost to the government.
Asylum cases can often take from 1 to 4 years to process.
